Breaking News: Christian Council Condemns Assault on Pastor

CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF GHANA CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON CHRISTIAN CLERIC AND CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RESTRAINT IN THE ESCALATING TENSIONS BETWEEN SOME SECTION OF CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS
The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) strongly condemns the physical assault inflicted upon the Christian cleric who was seen being slapped while in police custody, an act that grossly violates basic human dignity and the rule of law.
This disturbing incident follows a highly volatile chain of events, beginning with an alleged verbal attack on the Prophet Mohammed by the said Christian cleric. In swift reprisal, a video emerged of a Muslim cleric openly inciting violence against anyone who speaks against the Prophet. Both clerics have since been arrested by the Ghana Police Service. However, the subsequent physical assault of the handcuffed Christian cleric by an aggrieved individual has further escalated tensions and sparked widespread public outcry.
The CCG categorically condemns any purported insults or attacks directed at the Prophet
Mohammed, as well as the subsequent incitement to violence by the Muslim cleric. For decades, Ghana has enjoyed a peaceful and healthy interfaith coexistence, largely fostered by continuous collaborative engagements between the CCG and various Islamic bodies, most notably the Office of the National Chief Imam. We must not allow the reckless actions of a few individuals to derail this hard-won religious harmony. We urgently call on both Christians and Muslims across the nation to exercise immediate maximum restraint and avoid any further reprisal actions, whether online or offline.
We explicitly task the security services to deal with these infractions dispassionately, swiftly, and strictly according to law, without any recourse to religion, creed, or sentiment. The state must demonstrate that the law applies equally to all. This call is firmly grounded in Article 21(1)(c) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which guarantees freedom of religion but strictly within the bounds of public order, and Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which criminalises any conduct or offensive text or behaviour intent on provoking a breach of the peace. Let us allow the state institutions to work without interference.
