Christian Council of Ghana Strongly Condemns Electoral Violence and Calls for Justice, Reform, and National Healing

The Christian Council of Ghana strongly condemns the recent acts of electoral violence that marred the rerun of elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.

Ghana’s democratic journey, while notable, continues to be undermined by periodic violence during elections. The 2020 and 2024 elections alone resulted in at least 11 deaths, multiple injuries, and long-term trauma for many families. These tragedies must no longer be ignored. Now is the time for national accountability, reform, and healing.

Electoral violence—regardless of who is in power or which party is involved—is a direct attack on the foundations of democracy. It erodes public trust, undermines our institutions, and threatens the peace Ghanaians cherish. Such lawlessness must have no place in our political process.

We call on His Excellency the President, the Hon. Minister for the Interior, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, and the Inspector General of Police to take swift and decisive action. Perpetrators of electoral violence—past and present—must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted without fear or favor. Justice must be seen to be done to restore public confidence and deter future violations.

We further urge the Joint Security Task Force to adopt a proactive, coordinated approach to election security. Ghanaians deserve to vote freely and safely, without fear, intimidation, or harm. If impunity is allowed to fester, it will only deepen public suspicion that democratic institutions are compromised and that acts of violence are tolerated by those in authority. Left unaddressed, these perceptions threaten our democratic stability and future.

The Christian Council of Ghana also calls on the government to provide appropriate compensation and support to the families of those who were killed or injured during electoral violence. Beyond compensation, we propose the erection of a national memorial in front of Parliament House, bearing the inscription: “Martyrs of Democracy – Never Again!” as a lasting reminder of the cost of political conflict and the importance of peace.

We commend His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for referring a report on electoral violence to the Attorney-General for legal review. We now urge the President to make that report public and ensure all those responsible are held accountable. Transparency and justice must guide our path forward.

Ghana belongs to all of us. Let us not allow partisan interests to destroy the peace, unity, and democratic values we have worked hard to build. The Christian Council of Ghana calls on all stakeholders—government, political parties, security agencies, civil society, faith-based organizations, and the public—to come together to protect our democracy and uphold the rule of law.

Let us rise as one nation and declare:

"Never again to electoral violence. Never again to impunity." May the peace of the Lord be with us all.

Signed
