Press Release: Christian Council Commends President Mahama And Criticizes Lincoln University’s Decision The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) joins the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council in commending His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for his consistent commitment to preserving Ghana’s religious, moral and cultural values. The decision by Lincoln University to rescind the award of an honorary doctorate previously on the President of the Republic of Ghana due to President Mahama’s disapproval of the activities of LGBTQ+ — particularly when arrangements were at an advanced stage—is deeply regrettable. Nonetheless, it underscores the President’s principled stance in upholding his convictions as a Ghanaian and an African with respect to our moral values which frown upon LGBTQ+ activities. Lincoln University holds a historic place in Ghana’s national consciousness as the alma mater of Kwame Nkrumah, whose education there helped shape his leadership in Ghana’s independence struggle. The institution is also associated with several other prominent African figures, reinforcing its legacy as a partner in the advancement of Black dignity and Pan-African progress. Against this backdrop, the Christian Council of Ghana considers the Lincoln University’s action a diplomatic misstep. Inviting an incumbent Head of State and withdrawing the honour shortly before its conferment— particularly after international travel arrangements were already in place—falls short of the decorum expected of an institution of such standing. The decision conveys a sense of disregard not only for the President but for the dignity of Ghana. Ghana remains a deeply religious society, where faith and cultural values shape perspectives on family and social life. The Council reiterates that its position on LGBTQI+ matters reflects sincerely held religious and cultural beliefs shared broadly across Ghanaian society. These convictions are rooted in faith traditions and are not expressions of hostility. Against the backdrop of current developments, the CCG also expresses confidence that Ghana’s Parliament will without further delay revisit and pass the Family Values Bill and that the President will act in accordance with his stated commitments to sign it into law. The Council urges Lincoln University to reflect on its decision and take steps to restore the goodwill it has long enjoyed in Ghana and across Africa. It reaffirms its dedication to upholding the religious, cultural, and moral values that underpin Ghanaian society. Finally, the Christian Council assures President Mahama of its prayers and support as he continues to lead with conviction and integrity. Signed Rev. Dr. Cyril G. K.
