CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF GHANA CALLS FOR MINDSET CHANGE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD MALARIA DAY 2026

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) joins the global community to mark this year’s World Malaria Day.

Malaria, mostly found in tropical and subtropical climates, with the highest burden in sub-Saharan Africa, kills over 569,000 people annually, accounting for approximately 95% of all global malaria deaths. Sub-Saharan Africa bears a disproportionately high burden of the disease, with children under five years of age accounting for about 75-76% of these fatalities.

The CCG commends the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the aptness of this year’s theme: “Driven to end malaria: Now we can. Now we must,” and calls for more global funding and concerted action to end malaria. In AI driven 21st Century, the global community especially the millions of people living in malaria prone sub-Saharan Africa can and must fight to end the scourge of malaria. Malaria can be stopped if we take our biblical mandate (Genesis 2:15) to care for the environment very seriously.

Inspired by this year’s theme, the Christian Council of Ghana is partnering the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) to launch a bold initiative called Environmental Care and Cleanliness (ECC) Programme on Thursday April 30, 2026 at the Rev. Paul Wiegrabe Parish of the EP Church Ghana– Nima. In addition, this year’s annual Christian Home Week Celebrations with a study booklet on the theme: “A clean environment: Our responsibility!” is a bold attempt by the CCG to help ensure a clean environment. The global community including stakeholders in Ghana must promote community-level environmental management and personal protection strategies to end malaria and its concomitants

On this occasion of World Malaria Day, therefore, the CCG calls on governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to work together to end malaria through a sustained mindset change on general environmental care and cleanliness initiatives.

Happy World Malaria Day!

Signed

Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose
