Curbing the Recent Incidents of Violence in our Schools

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has noted with grave concern the violent incidents that marred the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru, Central Region, on February 19, 2026. Reports indicate that a clash between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business resulted in serious injuries to at least one student, including a broken tooth and facial wounds that required hospitalisation.

These acts of violence, widely circulated on social media, are deeply disturbing and undermine the peaceful purpose of educational and sporting activities while threatening the moral development of our youth. The Council commends the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) under the leadership of the Director-General, COP Lydia Yarkor Donkor, for the swift and decisive actions taken. These include her visit to the affected school, the immediate commencement of investigations, the arrest of three suspects, and the directive to the Headmaster of Swedru School of Business to produce the implicated students within 24 hours. These prompt measures demonstrate a strong commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of lives, and they send a clear signal that acts of indiscipline and lawlessness will not be tolerated.

The CCG also commends the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its decision to indefinitely suspend all zonal inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region. This measure is necessary to safeguard students, allow for a thorough review of the situation, and prevent further escalation amid growing concerns about indiscipline during recent inter-school events.

As a nation, we must not allow moral decadence and violent conduct to take root in our schools. These incidents point to deeper moral challenges that require urgent and collective attention to preserve our tradition of peaceful coexistence and public safety.

The Christian Council of Ghana stands ready to support efforts that promote discipline, reconciliation, and the moral formation of our youth. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured students and for wisdom for all authorities handling this matter.

May God bless our nation and make us great and strong.

Signed

Rev. Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose

General Secretary, Christian Council of Ghana
