PROTECTING TRUTH AND UNITY DURING THE ELECTION PERIOD

As we approach the elections, the Youth Network of the Christian Council of Ghana calls on all citizens, especially the youth, to uphold truth, integrity, and respect in all forms of communication. Elections are a pivotal moment in the life of our nation, but they also present opportunities for misinformation to flourish, often with dire consequences for individuals and communities.

It is disheartening to note that many have suffered unjustly due to the circulation of unverified or false information. Such actions sow discord, tarnish reputations, and disrupt peace. We urge everyone not to become a tool for spreading falsehoods, intentionally or unintentionally.

Key Guidelines for Responsible Communication

1. Be Cautious with Urgent Messages False messages often appeal to authority figures or create a sense of urgency. Phrases like "For Immediate Circulation!" are sometimes tactics to bypass critical scrutiny. Always verify the source and authenticity of information before forwarding it. Most public institutions have designated communication channels—rely on these for accurate updates.

2. Avoid Contextual Misrepresentation Short videos, audio clips, or media extracts rarely capture the whole story. They are often carefully edited to serve the specific agenda of the originator. Taking such clips at face value without understanding the broader context can lead to the spread of half-truths or outright lies.

3. Respect Privacy and Dignity Personal mistakes or private moments recorded and circulated can lead to irreparable harm. Imagine if it were you or a loved one. Respecting the privacy of others reflects Christian values and upholds the dignity of all.

4. Project Truth and Positivity As Christians, our calling is to be agents of truth and reconciliation. We are called to project truth, spread what is edifying, and focus on what builds up the body of Christ which includes the nation of Ghana.

Conclusion

The Christian Council of Ghana reminds all citizens that misinformation erodes democracy and peace. By committing to truth, verification, and respect in our communications, we contribute to a fair and peaceful electoral process.

We pray for the wisdom and discernment of every Ghanaian as we navigate this season. Together, let us uphold the values that define us as a nation under God.

Signed

Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose

General Secretary
