CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF GHANA CALLS FOR CONCERTED EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE WELFARE OF THE YOUTH AS THE WORLD MARKS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) extends its warmest well wishes to the vibrant youth of our beloved nation, Ghana, and across the globe, as we join the United Nations and the international community to celebrate International Youth Day on Wednesday August 12, 2026.

We do so with a profound sense of urgency, optimism, and spiritual responsibility. The global theme for this year, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," serves as a timely reminder of our shared human dignity. Though our young people live in diverse socio-economic, geographic, and cultural realities, their core yearnings remain universally aligned. They hunger for dignity, equal opportunity, quality education, decent work, and a sustainable future.

In Ghana, this global observance beautifully intersects with the month-long celebrations spearheaded by the National Youth Authority (NYA) under the theme: “Rebuilding Values, Inspiring Patriotism, Empowering the Youth in the Digital Age.” The Christian Council of Ghana highly commends this localised focus. It directly speaks to the moral, ethical, and civic fabric required to sustain our democracy and economic development.

We take this opportunity to explicitly commend the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment (MYDE) for its visionary leadership, demonstrated through the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Council and the Ministry. This agreement formalises a shared commitment to youth development.

Furthermore, we warmly acknowledge the recent courtesy call paid by the leadership of the National Youth Authority (NYA) to the CCG. These proactive institutional engagements signal a refreshing and necessary partnership between Church and State. By combining the moral authority and grassroots reach of religious bodies with the policy frameworks of government, we create a formidable ecosystem to advance the welfare of Ghanaian youth.

Ghana is blessed with a massive youth bulge. This demographic asset can either become a powerful economic catalyst or a source of profound social instability. The Christian Council of Ghana strongly urges the Government of Ghana, private sector actors, and civil society organisations to aggressively tap into this demographic dividend.

We must act decisively to prevent our young people from falling into the category of NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). A youth population left in idleness is a tragedy for the Church and a crisis for the State. We cannot look on while brilliant, energetic minds waste away due to systemic bottlenecks, lack of capital, or outdated educational curriculums and inadequate employment opportunities.

To prevent NEET, we call for:

• Targeted investments in technical and vocational education (TVET)

• Accessible entrepreneurship incubation hubs

• Agricultural incentives tailored specifically for the youth

• Robust mentorship pipelines within our corporate and religious institutions

True empowerment must be three-dimensional: holistic, ethical, and digital. The CCG charges all stakeholders, particularly the Church and other religious organisations, to provide sanctuaries of moral guidance. In an era where the internet offers boundless knowledge but also breeds cyberbullying, financial fraud, and misinformation, our youth need an unshakeable ethical compass.

We must intentionally empower our youth to navigate the Digital Age with integrity. Technology is a gift that must be harnessed for productivity, social cohesion, and economic growth. We urge the youth to utilise their digital expertise, creativity, and boundless energies not for destructive activities, but as powerful tools for nation-building.

The Church commits itself to using its pulpits, youth fellowships, and educational institutions to preach the values of hard work, patriotism, and digital responsibility. We will continue to partner with the State to ensure that the Ghanaian youth is structurally equipped and spiritually anchored to lead.

To our cherished youth, remember that your diverse backgrounds do not limit your common, God-given destiny. You are not just the future of Ghana; you are its vibrant present. Rise above the limitations of your current context. Channel your passions into local development, civic duty, and national pride.

May God bless and fortify the youth of Ghana and bless our homeland Ghana.
