Statement by the Christian Council of Ghana on the Tragic Loss of Eight Compatriots in a Helicopter Crash

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the Christian Council of Ghana mourns the tragic loss of eight gallant compatriots: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, who perished in yesterday’s helicopter crash at Sikaman near Akrofuom.

This devastating event marks a dark chapter in our national story; a Black Wednesday of grief and mourning. It follows closely on the heels of another heartbreaking tragedy: the loss of fifteen members of the Obogu Saviour Church Youth Ministry in a fatal accident at Juaso last month. Our collective sorrow is deepened, and our hearts are burdened.

We extend our deepest condolences to His Excellency, President John Mahama, and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces. We recognize the weight of leadership in moments such as these and pray that the Lord grants him divine strength, wisdom, and comfort.

To the bereaved families and loved ones, we offer our heartfelt sympathies. May the God of all comfort surround you with peace that surpasses understanding. May the memory of your loved ones be a lasting blessing, shining through the pain of this moment.

To the Ghana Armed Forces, we stand in solemn solidarity. These were not merely servicemen and public officials, they were embodiments of duty, courage, and sacrifice. Their passing is a national wound, and we honour their legacy with reverence and prayer.

To the people of Ghana, let us unite in grief and in hope. In moments such as these, we are reminded of our shared humanity and our collective need for grace. May this tragedy draw us closer to one another and to God, who remains our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.

We call upon all churches and faith communities to lift up prayers:

- For the souls of the departed

- For healing and comfort for the bereaved

- For wisdom and strength for our leaders

Let us mourn with faith and hope with conviction, trusting that even in the valley of the shadow of death, God walks with us.

May such a tragedy never again befall our beloved nation.

May the souls of our departed compatriots rest in perfect peace.

And may the light of Christ shine eternally upon their memory.

Amen.

Signed

Rev. Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose

General Secretary, Christian Council of Ghana
