Let Us Support Environment Care Initiatives - Christian Council
Today is World Environment Day and the global theme, “Ending plastic pollution,” is very apt. The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) recognises that the environment is our heritage; therefore, all stakeholders that are involved in environmental care must work concertedly to find a lasting solution to plastic pollution and other forms of pollution. Research has revealed that plastic waste is a major environmental threat that poses many dangers to ecosystems and human health. Plastic pollutes land, water, and air. It harms wildlife, pollutes food sources, and contributes to climate change.
On this occasion of World Environment Day, the CCG urges all stakeholders in the preservation of our environment to work concertedly not only to end plastic pollution but also, to help reduce other forms of pollution. We need to be conscious of environmental care in all spheres of our society – homes, schools, worship places, lorry parks, markets and social gatherings. Let us work together to rid our environment of plastics and other pollutants that threaten the health of our people. CCG believes that any threat on the health of our people is a threat on their wealth as well.
We wish to commend the Government of Ghana for the “One child one tree initiative.” CCG believes that this initiative will help instill environmental care principles in the younger generation and help us to promote afforestation to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in the long run. We urge all our mission schools, churches and all well-meaning stakeholders to support this tree planting initiative. It is our hope that this initiative together with the Sanitation Day scheduled for the first Saturday of every month, will go a long way to promote a healthy environment.
Signed
Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose
(General Secretary)
